Norfolk State head baseball coach Keith Shumate notched his 400th NCAA Division I career coaching victory during the scheduled season opening baseball game with an 8-3 win over Mount St. Mary’s University on February 16, 2024.
Shumate is in his seventh season as NSU head baseball coach. In 2021, Shumate led the Spartans to its first-ever MEAC baseball championship and postseason appearance at the Division I level. The Spartans captured a second MEAC Northern Division title in the last two completed seasons, winning 25 games and sweeping through the MEAC tournament unbeaten.
During Shumate tenure at Norfolk state, he has helped the team achieve national recognition.
Coach Shumate’s milestone win speaks volumes to the many student athletes he has coached over the years building NSU into one of the best HBCU baseball programs.
He played college baseball at Western Carolina from 1985 to 1988 and served as the head coach of the North Carolina A&T Aggies (1997–2011) and the Louisburg College Hurricanes (2013–2015).
On August 25, 2017, Shumate was hired as an assistant coach by the Norfolk State Spartans baseball program and on September 28, 2017, Shumate was named the interim head coach after head coach Claudell Clark resigned.
Shumate shared a Black College Baseball HBCU National Title at North Carolina A&T in 2005 along with Southern University.
“I’m thankful to all who have called me to congratulate. But, those who know me know that I’m 100 percent about the players and not any personal achievements. I want my players to grow, improve and have fun. I feel so privileged to coach baseball at an HBCU. I love what I do!”
