The No. 4 ranked Tigers of Edward Waters College swept in doubleheader action on Sunday afternoon in South Florida as the #7 NAIA ranked Northwood University Seahawks took game one by the score of 2-1 and 11-6 in game two.
In game one, all of Northwood scoring came in the first inning taking a 2-0 lead as Edward Waters starter Frederick Belz served up three triples which accounted for two earned runs. Belz settled down after allowing three hits with one man left on base.
After the 1st inning, Belz shut Northwood down allowed only two hits in the loss going 6.0 innings, 5 hits, 2 runs, and 3 strikeouts.
EWC had its chances to push runs across the plate. The Tigers only tally came in the top of the 6th inning after Northwood starter Steven Bruce was relieved by Alan Carey. Carey walked one, hit a batter. With two men on the Seahawks relieved for the second time in the inning. A ground ball advanced one runner to third on a fielder’s choice error from the second basemen allowed one run to score cutting it to 2-1 but EWC was shut out over the final 1.2 innings.
In game two, Northwood jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning. The Seahawks then extended their lead in the second inning made it 8-0, followed by two more runs made it 10-0. Edward Waters broke through with a run in the third making it 10-1. Northwood first basemen Ryan Palenzuela launched a mammoth solo homer to right field pushed it to 11-1.
The Tigers where only able to muster three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to get within 11-6, but was shut down after that.
Edward Waters fall to 16-14 on the year.
