Assistant baseball coach Oscar Espada announced he has withdrawn his name from consideration for the head coaching position at Mississippi Valley State.
Espada stated, “It was an honor to be involved in the process at Mississippi Valley State. It was a situation I found appealing. However, I believe there is more that can be accomplished with another coaching position in the future.”
Espada was believed to be one of the top targets in the Mississippi Valley coaching search.
The Mississippi Valley State athletic department has interviewed or had contact with former players Zack Penprase and Damon Lessler. Both are graduates of the school.
MVSU search for a replacement for Aaron Stevens began when his contract was not renewed after seven straight losing seasons. Espada, who was Stevens’ assistant coach, was immediately identified as one of the leading candidates and had several players, parents, and alumni in his corner.
Espada said that he had considered the move as a way “to advance professionally and eventually be a head coach.” The search to fill the vacancy could happen at any time.
