The Memphis Redbirds minor league baseball team honored Rust College for its back-to-back appearances in the Black College World Series presented By Tyson Foods. The 2022 tournament was held this past May at Riverwalk Stadium home of the Montgomery Biscuits minor league baseball affiliate of the Tampa Rays.
The Rust College baseball team was honored before the game in a special presentation that took place on September 11, 2022, as the team was recognized on the field at AutoZone Park in Memphis, Tennessee. The Bearcats were congratulated also for the great season going undefeated in conference play.
Rust also participated in MLB Play Ball Camp with the Memphis Redbirds and University of Memphis Saturday before Sunday’s 9/11 honored by the Memphis Redbirds for back-to-back appearance in the Black College World Series.
Rust College head coach John Bates led his team to its second appearance to the Black College World Series.
Bates likes to talk about the presence and impact of his players competing on the field and in the classroom, but as he gets his team set for the 2023 season and hopefully another appearance in the World Series, Bates acknowledged the privilege of being a part of something so historically prominent because it’s an honor and privilege to be able to come back to Montgomery, Alabama and compete for a national title among HBCU baseball programs.
