The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) races got more interesting as the second half of the season is in full bloom. The standings are changing daily from both mid-week and weekend actions leading to a solid finish to decide conference tournament seedings.
There were some big series wins last weekend with bigger developments are in store for this upcoming weekend.
The battle for first place in the MEAC North pits Coppin State against surprising Norfolk State who was picked to finish in last place prior to the start of the season. This series could turn into a preview of the conference championship.
In the MEAC South, North Carolina A&T (9-5) has a two game lead on North Carolina Central (7-7), with Florida A&M (7-8) and Bethune Cookman (7-8) within striking distance for first place. This is a tight race. Any upset this weekend or in the coming weeks can shakeup the standings. So far this season we have not had an upset within the division conference race. Last season NC A&T was in the driver’s seat, but not so this year.
In the SWAC West, Southern University (12-2) is leading the pack, having made a compelling jump from last season’s 6-15 conference record. If not for miscues with two outs during the early part of the season, the Jaguars overall record could be seven games on the plus side in the win column. Grambling State (11-7) could take the top spot because of its favorable remaining schedule, while Paririe View A&M (8-9) and Texas Southern (7-8), should finish with at least a .500 conference record.
Alabama State (14-3) looks like they are in the driver’s seat in first place in the East, but keep an eye on Jackson State (9-6) and Alabama A&M (8-9) as the race remains wide open to finish behind ASU.
Black College Nines will continue to update both MEAC and SWAC conference regular season stretch run through the remainder of the season.
