Freshman Hilman Truss continued his brutalization of D’Youville pitching this season as the third baseman drove in a career-high five runs as the Lincoln University baseball team completed the three-game ECC series sweep of D’Youville with the 14-6 win Tuesday at Maple Zone.
The game was rescheduled from March 28, which coincidentally was the last time the Lions played a game. Lincoln had their last two conference series postponed due to health and safety protocols.
Truss (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) connected on his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth inning. He singled home a run in the third inning to give LU the 2-0 lead and then singled home two more runs in the fourth inning as the Lions boosted their advantage to 6-1.
The Delaware State transfer now has nine of his 12 RBI against the Saints. He is hitting .500 (6-of-12) with three runs scored in the three games against D’Youville.
Lincoln scored in six of its eight plate appearances and every starter reached base at least once with seven of the nine starters registering a hit.
Freshman Alex Jones (Bear Del./Appoquinimink) (Bear, Del./Appoquinimink) extended his hitting streak to six games and recorded a career-high four hits, going 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Senior Elias Beltre (New York, N.Y./LAM International School) (New York, N.Y./LAM International School) extended his hitting streak to five in dramatic fashion, waiting until his final at-bat of the game, and then hitting the first home run of his career.
The Lions got a commendable effort on the mound as junior CarVonte Williams (Cleveland, Ohio/Twinsburg) (Cleveland, Ohio/Twinsburg) went six innings in his first start of the year. He allowed five earned runs on eight hits with two strikeouts and five walks in 104 pitches.
In his first appearance of the season, freshman Jefry Azcona (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) (Trenton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) had a hit in each of his first two plate appearances, and went 3-for-5 with a run scored and RBI.
