On Wednesday, June 9, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper released its Freshman All-American team just before the start of the NCAA Super Regional with one HBCU player listed on it, Jackson State University’s Chenar Brown.
Brown, the first-year first baseman, stepped into a leadership role in 2021, especially after his early-season first collegiate game against Mercer this past February, to hit .366. He was listed amongst the conference leaders finishing with 41 runs, 10 doubles, eight home runs, and collecting a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) best 49 runs batted in. Brown added five steals, with a 1.080 on-base percentage, a .651 slugging percentage and added a stellar glove to carry the Tigers to first place in the SWAC East Division.
Chenar Brown’s Freshman All-American honor follows his naming as a First Team HBCU Baseball “Large School” Black College Nines Elite.
Brown started all 43 games this season and played nearly every out in 2021 recording 13 assists and a .981 fielding percentage. He turned 13 doubles plays and committed just five errors in 43 games to go with some sparkling defensive plays.
