Jackson State defeated Alcorn State 6-4 Saturday afternoon in Southwestern Athletic Conference action and improved to 17-0 in conference play.
The Tigers received a strong outing from Mario Lopez. The lefty tossed 5 2/3 innings, scattered five hits, allowed two runs (unearned) and no walks and fanned three batters.
Antonio Valdez and Austin Campbell each tossed a third of an inning and Steven Davila pitched the eighth and ninth innings to earn his fifth save of the season.
Jefrey Rodriguez put the Tigers on the board with an RBI single in the bottom of the second inning. JSU added a run in the bottom of the third when CJ Newsome scored on an error.
Newsome came through with an RBI in the bottom of the fourth, while Wesley Reyes and Rodriguez each produced an RBI in the bottom of the fifth to open up a 5-1 lead.
Ty Hill scored on a wild pitch in the bottom half of the seventh.
Chandler Dillard, Devontae Rhodes, and Hill each picked up a pair of hits. Jatavious Melton, Tyler Jones each collected a hit.
