Jackson State Baseball Sweeps Rust In Non-Conference Twin Bill

JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State baseball team picked a pair of wins Friday evening by beating the Rust College Bearcats 9-2 and 8-0 in a non-conference double header at Braddy Field. With the wins JSU improved to a 7-5 record and a 5-2 record at Braddy Field.

In the opening game of the day, JSU scored its nine runs on nine hits. Melvin Rodriguez and David Burke each recorded three hits, a run and two RBIs. After giving up a run at the top of the first inning, the Tigers scored the next seven runs over the next three innings.

The Bearcats scored its last run of the game in the fourth inning. JSU added a run in the fifth and the sixth innings each. Jordan Bolden (1-0) pitched six innings, giving up two runs on one hit while striking out seven batters.

In the second game of the day, JSU recorded its first shutout of the season beating Rust 8-0. Garth Cahil pitched all seven innings, scattering seven hits, for the complete game. The Tigers scored their eight runs on nine hits. David Burke led JSU going a perfect 3-3 at the plate. The Tigers scored the first run of the game in the first inning and added two more in the third. JSU scored its last two runs in the sixth inning.

JSU returns to action Saturday, Mar. 7 when the Tigers host Tougaloo College in a non-conference double header at Braddy Field. First pitch is set for 1 pm. The game was originally scheduled to be played on Mar. 4 but was postponed because of inclement weather.
