HBCU Weekend Series of the Week

Alabama State vs. Southern University (SWAC Matchup)

Rod White here, National Scouting Director with the National Scouting Bureau, and this weekend’s featured series is a heavyweight SWAC clash. We’re looking at two programs showing elite offensive depth, middle-order power threats, and veteran lineup production that translates directly to higher-level recruiting evaluation models.

The “Pure Hitter” Spotlight: Miguel Oropeza (ASU)
Before we dive into the team metrics, we have to talk about the most polished bat in the yard: Miguel Oropeza.
I’ve been tracking Miguel for the last three years—two in the NAIA (where he was a statistical god) and now facing D1 arms. I can vouch for this: his bat-to-ball skills are second to none. He has the rare ability to maintain a high average while showing legitimate pop to all fields.
• Pro Outlook: He’s a Free Agent guy due to his age and status. If a club wants to ensure they get him, they move now and fast-track him to Double-A. You just don’t see this level of “pure hitter” profile much anymore.
• Versatility: I’ve mostly seen him at 1st, but he’s holding down Right Field for Bama State. Regardless of where you put him, the bat is going to produce.
Alabama State:
Offensive Matchup Overview
The Hornets enter the weekend led by a balanced offensive core with multiple hitters producing at an OPS above .950.
Alabama State Offensive Leaders
• Miguel Oropeza (.387 / .988 OPS): The high-contact engine of the lineup.
• Devin Chandler (.333 / 1.045 OPS): Profiles as an elite table-setter. He stands out due to his combination of power (3 HR) and elite on-base skills (** .512 OBP**), suggesting advanced strike zone control.
• Trey Callaway (The Power Threat): 6 HR, .642 SLG, and a 1.023 OPS. Callaway is the impact bat capable of changing game momentum with one swing.
• Jackson Williams: 5 HR, 19 RBI, 39 TB. A run-producer with gap power that translates well into conference play.
NSB Alabama State Summary:
• Strengths: Multiple OPS threats above .950; middle-order power; solid walk rates.
• Concern Areas: Strikeout totals among power bats; bottom-third lineup consistency.
Southern University:
Offensive Matchup Overview
Southern enters with slightly stronger top-end OPS production and high-damage contact indicators.
Southern University Offensive Leaders
• Jaylon Lucky (.379 / 1.034 OPS): The Jaguars’ most complete performer. Combines a .500 OBP with extra-base production (9 doubles).
• Xavier Bradley (The Damage Man): Bradley might be the most dangerous pure power bat in the series. He’s rocking a 1.246 OPS (highest in the series) and a .733 SLG with 3 HR in a limited sample.
• Secondary Support: Jacoby Radcliffe and Kameron Byrd provide the depth that gives Southern a slight edge in lineup length from a scouting standpoint.
NSB Southern Summary:
• Strengths: Highest individual OPS performer; strong extra-base production; team speed component.
• Concern Areas: Starters’ strikeout totals; run prevention reflected in opponent OPS allowed.
NSB Series Scout Evaluation
From an evaluation standpoint, Southern shows a slightly higher offensive ceiling, while Alabama State shows more lineup balance. The difference-maker will come down to power execution and situational hitting.
Pro-Style Evaluation Indicators Observed:
• College Follow Traits: OPS above .900; SLG above .500; Walk-to-K ratios showing discipline.
• Power Projection: Callaway (ASU), Bradley (SU), Chandler (ASU), Jackson (ASU)
• Contact / Table Setters: Oropeza (ASU), Lucky (SU).
NSB ScoutWire Projection
Alabama State wins if: Top three hitters produce consistently; power bats limit swing-and-miss; pitching limits Southern’s extra-base damage.
Southern wins if: Bradley/Lucky continue OPS production; run-production depth continues; speed game pressures the ASU defense.
NSB Scout Grade – Series Outlook
• Overall Grade: Competitive SWAC Impact Series
• Offensive Ceiling: B+
• Power Presence: B
• Recruiting Follow Players: 5–7

Closing Evaluation: This series features multiple players who project as conference impact performers. Oropeza is the wildcard—a pro-ready bat that scouts need to be circling. His bat to ball skills with ability to show pop is pretty much 2nd to none. Late Round/Free Agent guy that I believe can be fast tracked Double A ball. I think either way it will not be an issue for him to produce.
