HBCU Baseball’s Top “No Fly Zone” Outfielders

Below is Black College Nines’ annual post-season top “No Fly Zone” HBCU baseball outfielders. The list provides the best in all of HBCU baseball reaching balls hit in the gaps and turning would be hits into outs.

BCN evaluated players by arm strength, fielding range, speed, and hitting for power and average.

The phrase “No Fly Zone” was used by former Texas College head coach and current Prairie View A&M pitching coach Anthony “Happy” Macon to describe his Texas Steers 2018 outfielders who turned balls driven into the gap that appeared to be a hit, but were caught as outs.

No. 1 Elijah James Morehouse College

James hit .344, played in 39 games for the Maroon Tigers, 44 hits with 24 runs scored, 32 runs batted in, 8 doubles, 1 triples, 2 home runs, and swiped 13 stolen bases. One of HBCU baseball’s best outfielders with a fielding percentage of 1.000 with 76 putouts and 5 assists with 0 errors. Based on 2024 Statistics:

No. 2 Khyle Radcliffe Southern University

Radcliffe hit .346, played in 48 games for the Jaguars, 66 total hits with 36 runs scored, 47 runs batted in, 15 doubles, 6 home runs. One of the top HBCU outfielders had a 1.000 fielding percentage with 83 putouts and 4 assists with 0 errors. Based on 2024 Statistics:

No. 3 Ty Jackson Florida A&M University 

Jackson has power on the offensive side with a .387 batting average playing in 47 games, 65 hits in 168 at-bats with 11 doubles, 8 home runs and 41 runs batted in. No. 4 Kendal Spencer Savannah State University 

At the plate, Spencer batted .366, with 67 hits, 16 doubles, 5 triples, 6 home runs, and 60 runs batted in which included 32 stolen bases. He had 139 putouts, and 5 assist, with a fielding percentage of .993 Based on 2024 Statistics:

No. 5 Reyfield Adams Alcorn State University 
Adams’ fielding percentage was .991 with 105 putouts in 40 games. He batted .270 with 10 stolen bases in 137 at bats, scored 23 runs, 37 hits, 2 doubles, 2 triples. One of HBCU baseball’s fastest outfielders. Based on 2024 Statistics:

No. 6 Tyeler Hawkins Southern University 

Hawkins, plays a good outfield and tracks down balls well in the gaps. This season he had a .989 fielding percentage with 89 putouts. He was also stellar on the offensive side with a .386 batting average, 57 hits, 11 doubles, 48 runs batted in. Based on 2024 Statistics:

No. 7 Gavin Terry University of Arkansas Pine-Bluff

Terry’s stellar defensive work with speed and standout tools who moves well to the ball in the outfield. At the plate, he had a .336 batting average this past season, hit 4 doubles, 1 triples, 1 home runs, in 34 games.  Based on 2024 Statistics:

No. 8 Trevor Hatton Grambling State University 
Hatton’s second appearance on our “No Fly Zone” list. His fielding percentage was .989 with 79 putouts in 42 games. He batted .283 in 138 at bats, scored 27 runs, 69 hits, 12 doubles, 5 triples, 4 home run and 35 runs batted in. Hutton was the Black College Nines HBCU Baseball “large school” Player of the Year in 2023. Based on 2024 Statistics:

No. 9 Garrett Chun Bethune Cookman University 

Chun recorded a .984 fielding percentage this past season with 105 putouts and 4 assists playing in 59 games. He recorded two errors. At the plate, Chun batted .272, banged out 63 hits, 7 doubles, 3 triples, no home runs but drove home 41 runners. Based on 2024 Statistics:

No. 10 Isaias Landry Alabama State University 
Landry recorded a .982 fielding percentage this season with 105 putouts and 4 assists in 54 games started. This past season season, he batted .324 including, 59 hits, scored 40 runs, 10 double, 5 triples, 2 home runs and 28 run batted in. Based on 2024 Statistics:
