HBCU Baseball Weekend in Review – Large School Division

The Mississippi Valley State University baseball program, for the first time in more than two years, put up a “W” winning a doubleheader 15-3 and 16-8 marking the first win since defeating Alcorn on April 26, 2019. Mississippi Valley is 2-0 to start the season.

For the first time since the 2020 when pandemic shut all of collegiate baseball down and after cancelling the entire 2021 season, the Bethune Cookman Wildcats get there first win to open their 2022 campaign beating Youngstown State, 3-1 Friday night opening the three-games series. The Cats would lose the remaining two-games by one run in each game, 7-6 and 10-9.

Southern University opened the 2022 season in the annual Andre Dawson MLB Classic defeating Alabama State Friday 7-6 and Saturday over Jackson State 7-5, before a walk-off come from behind 8-7 victory by Florida A&M, to go 2-1 on opening weekend.

Grambling State opened the 2022 season in the Andre Dawson MLB Classic cruising  to a 10-1 blowout win in the opener defeating Jackson State Friday, then got run-ruled in a12-2 loss to New Orleans Saturday. The Tigers defeated University of Arkansas Pine Bluff 11-7 on Sunday to go 2-1 over its opening weekend.
