HBCU Baseball Weekend In Review – Large School Division

Florida A&M capture first win of the season over the weekend.

A pretty solid weekend of action was reflected on the baseball diamond. There were rallies and high scoring affairs. Overall it’s the win column that matters. This is the HBCU baseball weekend in review – large school division… 

Delaware State University – (2-4) Won the program’s first games of the season. The baseball team put on a school-record performance sweeping a doubleheader from Mount St. Mary’s 32-11 and 11-5. The combined 43 runs in the doubleheader marks a new team high.

North Carolina Central University – (8-5) The baseball program battled back against East Tennessee State (10-5) to split its doubleheader on Saturday, March 13 at the Durham Athletic Park as the Buccaneers took the first game, 5-1, and the Eagles took the second, 3-2.

Jackson State University – (10-5) The Tigers swept SWAC foe Alcorn State 30-6 Sunday afternoon scored 14 runs in the seventh inning after having a 16-6 lead.  The 14 runs were on 7 hits, 4 walks, and 5 hit batters and the game was called due to the mercy rule. JSU improved to 10-5 overall and 5-0 in SWAC play and are on a seven game winning streak. University of Arkansas Pine Bluff – (2-8) The Golden Lion baseball team defeated Texas Southern in a three-game series this past weekend winning two games over the Tigers 14-3 and 14-10. 

Florida A&M University – (3-12) The Rattlers snap a 12 game losing streak over the weekend sweeping Grambling State in the in the Inaugural Ralph Garr-Bill Lucas HBCU Baseball Classic.

Coppin State University – (2-8) The Eagles where down by five runs early in the game to La Salle, chipped away and fought back to take a 10-6 lead late in the game.  However the Explorers, trailing by three in the bottom of the ninth, rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to defeat Coppin State, 11-10, for the walk-off win.

Alabama State University – (3-10) The Hornets salvaged a 9-8 win in the final game of the weekend series with Bradley in non conference action.

Norfolk State University – (3-10) Spartans split a doubleheader with Longwood. Longwood took game one, 8-5, while Norfolk State won game two, 2-1.
