This week has been filled with postponements and cancellations for HBCU baseball programs due to the severe winter weather slamming a majority of the country. Tougaloo College had its games against Marian University postponed twice. Many teams are now going down a similar path.
The winter weather storms are calling off season opening series as well leaving teams currently without an opponent for opening the weekend.
Prairie View was going to play Alabama State, Alabama A&M, and Jackson State beginning Friday, February 19th in the Andre Dawson MLB Classic. Now, it is an open space on the slate for the weekend.
The Panthers, like many HBCU baseball teams, does plan to look for a new opponent for the weekend if they are able to still find one. Because of inclement weather programs will have the opening weekend off.
Southern University’s scheduled opening season three-game series with the Oklahoma Sooners that was originally scheduled for February 19-21 has been canceled. Southern will travel to No. 7 LSU on February 23rd for a 6:30 pm game in Baton Rouge, LA.
Prairie View A&M’s 2021 season opener in the Andre Dawson Classic in New Orleans has been canceled. The Panthers will open the season on February 26-27 visiting McNeese State, in Lake Charles, LA.
Grambling State will not play in the Andre Dawson MLB Classic, instead the Tigers will next travel to the University of Memphis on February 27-28.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff’s season-opening series in the Andrew Dawson Class was canceled and will open its 2021 season with mid-week games on February 23-24 at No. 20 Tennessee in Knoxville.
Because of the cancellation of the Andre Dawson MLB Classic, Alabama State will open the 2021 season in a round-robin tournament on February 20-21 against Jacksonville State on Saturday afternoon, Tennessee Tech on Saturday evening and with Southern Illinois on Sunday.
Alabama A&M, also originally scheduled to participate in the Andre Dawson Major League Classic in New Orleans, will start its season on February 23-24 at No. 25 Auburn University.
Weather conditions have forced the postponement of Norfolk State’s season opener at Old Dominion. The game has been rescheduled for February 24th. The Spartans will now open the season on Saturday, February 20-21.
Coppin State’s baseball season opener at Navy has been rescheduled for February 21st.
The Lincoln University baseball program has changes to its upcoming schedule. The three-game opening series against Mid-Atlantic Christian has been moved to February 21-22. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday and a nine-inning game on Monday.
Miles College’s home opener this past Tuesday hosting the University of West Alabama was canceled and has been rescheduled for April 7. The scheduled conference doubleheader with Morehouse on February 20th has also been canceled. The Morehouse College Department of Athletics has recently announced its decision to cancel all intercollegiate winter and spring sports for the 2020-21 season. Miles College’s home season opener will now be February 24th with Alabama-Huntsville in Birmingham.
Tougaloo College had to shut down six of its scheduled games including the four-game series with Marian University, and a doubleheader against Blue Mountain College. The Bulldogs opens its season on February 20-21 visiting Stillman University in Tuscaloosa.
