HBCU Baseball Prepares for an Extensive Slate of Mid-Week and Weekend Season Opening Games

A slate of Historically Black College and University (HBCU) baseball games are on tap this week, February 1-5, 2023. With season openers for many, there will be some exciting matchups on the diamond.

Two intriguing matchups during the weekend to keep an eye on the two teams ranked in Black College Nines’ (BCN) 2023 Preseason Top 10 small school poll the battle between in-state arch-rivals, a rematch of the 2022 Black College World Series NAIA Bracket Championship has No. 4 Florida Memorial University visiting No. 1 Edward Waters University in Jacksonville, Florida. Both programs open their 2023 season the weekend of February 3-4 with three-game opening series doubleheader beginning Friday and concluding Saturday with a nine-inning affair at J.P. Small Memorial Stadium.

Keep an eye on the battle between Virginia State University visiting Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia. Head Coach Merrill Morgan enters the season with his upstart VSU squad looking to upset preseason No. 2 Savannah State. The three-game series opens the weekend of February 4-5 with a single game series opener Saturday followed by a doubleheader concluding Sunday series finale.

There are other interesting matchups during the week. Lane plays four non-conference games in three days.
