HBCU Baseball Midweek And Weekend In Review – Small School Division

This past midweek and weekend play in HBCU baseball’s small schools produced quite a bit of action on the baseball diamond. Home runs, outstanding defensive plays, lights-out pitching and extra base hits were some of the highlights to the week’s play. Xavier University of Louisiana completed a three-game sweep of Rust College by winning 2-1 and 4-0 in a Saturday doubleheader. In the series opener, the Gold Rush took a 9-1 decision. Xavier, with a11-3 record to date, is in its first varsity season since 1960 and extended its winning streak to seven games.

Mackenze Gay hit a three-run homer in the doubleheader opener

After dropping the series opener 17-6 on Friday, Claflin split the doubleheader on Saturday winning the first game 4-3 and dropping the second game 14-2. Mackenze Gay hit a three-run home run to right field to give Claflin its second win of the season.

West Virginia State Baseball remains perfect in Mountain East Athletic Conference action, sweeping Saturday’s doubleheader with Fairmont State to improve to 9-3 overall and 6-0 in league play. The Yellow Jackets are the No. 1 ranked team in Black College Nines HBCU Baseball Top 10 “Small School” poll.

Jarvis Christian took three of four from the University of the Southwest over the weekend winning games one and two of the doubleheader 5-4 and 6-4 on Friday, before splitting Saturday’s doubleheader taking game one 4-3 then losing the series finale 13-1.

Krystian Negron picked up the win on the mound for FMU

Florida Memorial University was able to come away with a split in Saturday’s doubleheader against host and NAIA ranked No. 25 Webber International University – taking the second game 7-6 – snapping the team’s seven-game losing streak.

Lincolns pitcher Trevon Sutton

The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania baseball team recorded its first East Coast Conference doubleheader sweep Saturday, beating ECC newcomer D’Youville, 10-1 and 8-1. According to Lincoln’s athletic department, the game brought to an end a couple of long droughts as it has been 969 days since the last home game and 1,508 days since the Lions recorded a doubleheader sweep.


With the bases loaded, two out, and Edward Waters down 4-3 in the bottom of the 8th, first baseman Cayden Frankie sent the crowd and his teammates into a frenzy with this towering grand slam to give EWC the lead and the win in defeating No. 3 Savannah State 7-4 in the JAXDiamond Classic.
