Grambling State’s Rafael Ramirez Named To Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award 2019 Watch List

Grambling State junior infielder Rafael Ramirez was one of 30 players named to the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award 2019 Watch List in an announcement made on February 11th.

A San Anotnio, Texas native who is a scholar student athlete majoring in Kinesiology, Ramirez boasts a 3.88 GPA. Last season he played in 47 games with a .353 average in 170 at-bats and 60 hits, including a team-high 17 doubles and 16 home runs. He drove in a team-high 66 runners and scored 36 times. Ramirez was second on the team in walks with 24 and was hit by pitch seven times. Nationally, Ramirez ranked first in runs batted in, fifth in slugging percentage, 13th in home runs per game and 22nd in runs batted in.

Ramirez is the second HBCU baseball player selected for the slugger award watch list. Former Texas Southern standout, Kamren Dukes made the list in 2017.

The Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award was open to only nominations from Texas but since expanded to all Division I baseball programs in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and New Mexico. There are 30 players on the Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award watch list representing 26 programs from five states. The award is based on performance at the plate, academics and personal integrity.

The BBCSA will announce finalists for the award in May. The winner of the third annual Bobby Bragan Collegiate Slugger Award presented by SR Bats will be announced in June and honored at a gala in the fall.
