The baseball journey continues for Grambling State’s Cameron Bufford, who now will play professionally in the Major League MLB Draft League. The South Holland, Ill. native inked a contract with the State College Spikes and reports to the University Park, Pennsylvania squad on July 18.
Bufford etched his name in the history books of Grambling State Athletics with his school-record-breaking 38th career home run in GSU’s 3-2 victory over Florida A&M this past season. He finished his collegiate career with 46 homers.
Bufford elevated his game in front of MLB scouts after he received an invitation to the 2024 MLB Draft Combine in Phoenix, Arizona last month where he had the opportunity to participate in a series of medical and performance assessments as well as educational programming designed to prepare for a career in professional baseball.
Bufford was one of the best bats in the SWAC in the last four seasons. His career hitting statistics include a .325 batting average in 207 games (all as a starter), 212 runs scored, 260 hits, 40 doubles, 11 triples, 46 home runs, 219 runs batted in, and 192 stolen bases
The MLB Draft League is a six-team baseball league featuring a split-season amateur-professional format. The first half of the MLB Draft League season features Draft-eligible players aiming to improve their stock ahead of the annual MLB Draft in July. The League switches to a professional format in the second half, with paid players comprising the six rosters to get on an MLB roster.
