For Fourth Straight Week Alabama State Receives Votes in Division I Poll

With a seven game winning streak, Alabama State (13-3 overall and 3-0 in the SWAC) continues to receive votes for the fourth straight week in this week’s National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division I poll after a weekend three-game sweep of Mississippi Valley State.

The Hornets stayed undefeated in conference play and swept their third consecutive series.

ASU pitching is gaining national attention. Right-hander Jacknell Guzman, who leads the nation in complete games, threw his third this weekend with 16 strikeouts against Mississippi Valley State, Breon Pooler picked up nine strikeouts and Austin King punched out 11 in his recent Sunday start. Hornets pitching includes 11 consecutive scoreless innings and 45 strikeouts in 27 innings over the weekend against Mississippi Valley State.

Offensively, Alabama State is ranked 12th in the nation in walks with 91 as a team, they are also ranked 10th in triples, 15th in triples per game and 21st in win-loss percentage. On the hill, Guzman leads the nation in complete games with two, while he and Austin King are tied for 13th in games started (four). Breon Pooler is currently ranked 23rd in earned run average, while Jabronski Williams leads the nation in triples with four and is third in triples per game, while Jeremy Rivera and Guzman are third in wins with three.

The Hornets next five home games include Valparaiso in a two-game midweek non-conference contest March 10-11, then return to SWAC action with a weekend series tilt hosting Alcorn State March 13-15, before traveling to No. 15 Auburn March 17.
