It took over five hours and 19-innings before Florida Memorial University pulled out a one-run victory over Albany State University in the 2023 Black College World Series on May 13th. But it only took minutes after the initial celebration to pick the tourney’s MVPs.
Max Charnin and Jalen Young, both from BCWS winning Florida Memorial, left Montgomery, Alabama’s Riverwalk Stadium with Most Valuable Pitcher and Most Valuable Player laurels, respectively.
Max Charnin, the junior righty who earlier in the week was named a first-team 2003 Black College Nines All-Elite, was selected the pitching MVP for his starting outing in FMU’s NAIA Division title winning game versus Rust College. In seven innings, the Lions’ pitching ace gave up five hits and two earned runs in picking up the victory to lead Florida Memorial into the World Series championship game.
In that same game, Florida Memorial’s Jalen Young, the tournaments Most Valuable Player, went 5-for-5 with three runs batted in and a home run. For the tournament, the senior outfielder hit .556 and was the series leader in hits (10), runs scored (7), and home runs (2), while tying for the lead in runs batted in (7), total bases (16), and stolen bases (4).
