Edward Waters University baseball (18-13) got back in the win column on Tuesday with a 10-0 win against Thomas University as a trio of EWU pitchers held the Night Hawks to just one hit.
Four runs would have been enough for the Tigers, and all four came in the first inning. Hugo Schoening and Torry Jones walked to get the early rally started. Edward Waters then got two straight doubles from Misael Ramos and Efrain Pantoja to take a 2-0 lead. Caden Hutchinson’s ground out plated a run. With two outs, Pantoja came around to score on a wild pitch.
The Tigers scored another run in the second inning and took advantage of two straight Dave Mitchum stolen bases when he swiped second and third after being walked. Jones’s groundout scored Mitchum for a 5-0 lead.
EWU had five batters reach base at the bottom of the fifth inning on four hits, scoring four runs. In the inning, Hutchinson and Jones doubled, and Conner Nobles singled with Tyler Smith’s sacrifice fly increasing the lead to 9-0. They would add another run in the sixth on Jones’s home run to left center field for the 10-0 victory.
Tiger’s pitchers flirted with a no-hitter. The Night Hawks only hit occurred in the seventh inning, the final inning of 10-run rule ball game.
Elvin Polanco (W, 1-0) was the starter in this one and pitched 2.0 innings. Josh Taylor 1.0 and Bruno Lopez 2.0 recorded three strikeouts, and Andres Carracciolo pitched 1.0 inning. Liam Prepite pitched the final 1.0 innings and gave up the only hit.
Jones was 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring three runs and two runs batted in, while six other Tigers recorded hits each. Ramos, Pantoja, Dannon Smith, Bobby Torres, and Conner Nobles each had one RBI.
