Delaware State University has named Pedro Swann as the seventh head coach of the Hornets baseball program, announced Tuesday, September 3 by the Delaware State Athletic Department.
Swann, a native of Wilmington, Delaware, comes back to Delaware State as a former player who played for the Hornets from 1989 to 1991, earning conference honors all three years in Dover. After three seasons at DSU, Swann was drafted in the 26th round of the 1991 Major League Baseball draft by the Atlanta Braves. He spent 16 seasons in the minors before making his debut for the Braves in 2000.
Coach Swann played all of 2001 with the Braves’ Triple-A affiliate in Richmond and became a free agent at the end of the season. On February 14, 2002, Swann signed with the Toronto Blue Jays and spent most of the season in Triple-A.
In 2003, he signed with the Baltimore Orioles and played in 25 Major League baseball games.
He became a free agent after the 2004 season and signed a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds for the 2005 season. In 127 games for Triple-A Louisville, he hit .285 with 18 home runs and 85 Runs batted in. In 2006, he played in Double-A and Triple-A for the Philadelphia Phillies, with the Tabasco Olmecs in the Mexican League, and Camden Riversharks of the independent Atlantic League. In 2007, he again played for Double-A and Triple-A teams and announced his retirement before the start of the 2008 season.
After his minor league playing days, Swann joined the collegiate coaching ranks as the head baseball coach of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks before the 2013 season and coached from 2013 to January 2015. He left after the 2014 season to become the bench coach for the Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic League in 2015.
Pedro Swann is the founder of Pro Swing Sports Academy, an indoor training facility in Middletown, Delaware where he served as a hitting instructor as well as head coach of three youth travel baseball teams.
Swann graduated from Delaware State in 1995 with a degree in Business Administration. He finished his collegiate playing career as the all-time batting average leader with a .421 batting average in three seasons. Currently, he is the career leader at DSU, with 26 home runs and 131 runs batted in.
Swann is the first head coach in 25 years at Delaware State. He replaces former coach Jean-Paul Blandin, who manned the program in the fall of 2000 and retired after this past 2024 season.
