Coppin State Baseball Receives ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award for Fourth-Straight Season

For the fourth-straight season, Coppin State’s baseball team received the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award, it was announced by the organization earlier this month. Coppin was one of 94 Division I programs to receive the honor and one of just two MEAC schools.

To be eligible for the award, the team must have recorded a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 during the academic year. The Eagles recorded a 3.20 Team GPA with 22 student-athletes recording at least a 3.0 grade point average for the year.

“I’m proud of the culture that our student-athletes have established for the baseball team pertaining to academic achievement,” said head coach Sherman Reed. “As a coaching staff, we have stressed that every opportunity that’ll come their way begins with high academic achievement. I’m even more proud of their accomplishments this past year and a half given the adjustment to distance learning.”

The Eagles featured one of the youngest rosters in the Nation last season with 20 of 33 players classified as either freshman or redshirt freshman due to COVID. Coppin finished 10-29 on the season with seven conference victories, a pair of wins over Mount St. Mary’s and its first win over Navy since 2013.
