The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) continues to be well represented in the NCAA South Regional Top 10 Rankings for 2022. For the second straight week, Albany State and Savannah State are listed in the weekly National Collegiate Baseball Writers Associations (NCBWA) Regional DII Poll. The NCBWA ranks Savannah State No. 8 and Albany State receiving votes in the latest poll announced Wednesday, April 27th.
Savannah State (30-10 overall and 25-2 in the conference) took sole possession of first place in the SIAC last weekend winning two of three games from Albany State (25-11 overall and 24-5 in conference). Savannah State win last week decide the regular season conference champion.
The Tigers and Golden Rams are one of the teams hoping to win the SIAC Championship which comes with a NCAA regional berth or a trip to Montgomery, AL Riverwalk Stadium and the Black College World Series May 10-15, 2022.
The NCAA list Albany State as “5 of the most potent lineups in DII baseball, right now” for scoring runs without using the long ball.
The NCAA article was written by Wayne Cavadi who had this to say about Albany State.
“There is perhaps no better team at getting players on base and putting the ball in play this season than the Golden Rams. Of the 12 players that have played at least 20 games, 11 are hitting .330 or better. This team leads DII baseball in batting average (.364) and on-base percentage (.488), and the Rams don’t waste those ducks on the pond. They are the second-best scoring team at 11.8 runs per game. Nicholas Hernandez brings the lumber for this squad, hitting .418 with nine home runs and 47 RBIs and 41 runs scored. Each player in the everyday lineup has scored at least 28 runs this season.”
This marks the second time this season the Tigers and the Golden Rams have received votes in NCBWA NCAA DII Top 10 South Region poll.
