Alabama State University has reclaimed the No. 1 ranking this week in Black College Nines’ Top 10 large school HBCU baseball poll announced on April 19, 2016.
The Hornets of Alabama State, 23-13 overall, 15-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), was idle this past weekend, but has won seven of its last eight games which include a three-game series sweep against conference division foe Jackson State University on the road, received the most first-place votes and total points in the “large school” division. Dropping down to the No. 2 spot is Florida A&M University.
There was movement throughout the remaining poll slots. Grambling State University climbed into the No. 3 spot, while Jackson State University slipped down to No. 4. Two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) teams rose in the poll, Bethune-Cookman University jumped to No. 5 and North Carolina Central University leaped two spots to No. 6. Norfolk State University fell two spots to No. 7. The University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff moves up one spot to No. 8, as Texas Southern University falls two spots to No. 9. Entering the poll for the first time this season Alcorn State University moved in at No. 10.
Falling out of the Top 10 “large school” poll were Prairie View A&M University and Savannah State University
In the “small school” division, for the first time this season, Edward Waters College garners the top spot in Black College Nines’ Top 10 ranking. The Tigers, on a 12 game winning streak, are 25-11 overall and 8-0 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC). Solid pitch from the starters and middle relievers and timely hitting have led Edward Waters to winning 17 of its last 20 ballgames.
For the second consecutive week, Miles College retains the No. 2 spot as there were major developments through the remaining Top 10. Selma University leaped two spots to No. 3. West Virginia State University moved up to No. 4, while Winston Salem State University stepped up to No. 5. Paine College dropped to No. 6 and Benedict College tumbled seven spots to No. 7. Stillman College entered the poll for the first time this week at No. 8. Two teams fell one spot each, Jarvis Christian College at No. 9 and Talladega College No. 10 respectfully.
Falling out of the Top 10 in the “small school” poll was Harris-Stowe State University.
The crowning of Black College Nines National Champions will be announced on Tuesday, May 24th, 2016 at 10 AM (EST) on the Black College Nines’ website.
The Voting Committee of Black College Nines determines the Top 10 rankings. Overall records do not include ties.
