Alabama State University tops the first edition of the 2015 Historically Black College and University (HBCU) regular season baseball poll announced by Black College Nines on March 17, 2015.
The Hornets, who have had some impressive wins in the early season, received the most first-place votes and total points in the “large school” division which is made up of NCAA Division I baseball programs. Alabama State is led by a talented pitching staff which ranks among the top in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Right behind Alabama State is fellow Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) member and rival, Alabama A&M University
In the “small school” division, made up of NCAA Division II and III schools as well as those in the NAIA, Virginia State University leads the way, followed closely by Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) foe, Winston-Salem State University. The Trojans, have won their 8 of their last 10 games with solid pitching and hitting. As a team, VSU has a .369 batting average and an ERA of 3.79, to go along with its 13-2 record.
Black College Nines national rankings poll is in its first year of existence and is a revival of the only previous HBCU baseball rankings, last conducted in 2012 by Ruffin Bell on his Black College Baseball website.
