Alabama State junior catcher Hunter May (Slidell, La.) and junior lefthander Osvaldo Mendez (Carolina, PR) swept the weekly honors handed out by the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) on Wednesday afternoon.
May was named the Hitter of the Week after leading the Hornets in hitting at .636 in a three-game sweep of Florida A&M to open conference play. He went 7-for-11 at the plate and drove in 10 runs in the three-game series. May finished with three doubles and a pair of home runs on the weekend while slugging 1.455 and recording an on-base percentage of .692 against the Rattlers.
Meanwhile, Mendez was named the Pitcher of the Week after his Saturday relief performance of starter Kyler McIntosh (Columbus, Ind.). Mendez wen 5.2 scoreless innings for the Hornets, not allowing a baserunner and picking up the win out of the bullpen while striking out eight in the process.
