2025 HBCU Baseball Season Week Two Weekend Recap

Black College Nines covers the entire week, including weekends with recaps as we continue reporting on HBCU baseball. This week’s recap focuses on the season’s second weekend.

The No. 7 Albany State Golden Rams concluded their weekend series against University of South Carolina-Beaufort with a series win, taking two out of three games. They started strong on Friday, winning the first game 9-5. In the doubleheader that followed, they earned a 15-10 victory in Game 2 but lost the series finale 13-6. With this series win, Albany State’s record improved to 3-3 for the season.

The Rust College Bearcats baseball team won their series against Clark Atlanta. They started with a 7-4 victory in the first game on Friday. On Saturday, they played a doubleheader, losing the first game by one run with a score of 6-5, but they bounced back to win the series finale 6-4 later that afternoon at Gresham Park.

The Edward Waters Tigers staged a dramatic four-run rally in the ninth inning on Friday, securing a 13-12 victory over Florida Memorial University, a formidable in-state rival in HBCU baseball. This match was part of the season-opening Big Cat Classic held in Miami Gardens. On Saturday, the Tigers split a doubleheader, winning the second game 10-1 but losing the series finale to the Lions with a score of 4-1.

After leading a powerhouse NAIA HBCU baseball program, new Florida Memorial University head coach Wil Ramos achieved his first win on his return to coaching. He split a doubleheader against Edward Waters University, securing his first victory as head coach with a 4-1 win in the finale of the three-game series at FMU.

The Voorhees University Tigers celebrated a decisive victory in their home opener against the Kentucky State University Thorobreds on Friday, February 7, 2025. The final score was Voorhees University 7, Kentucky State University 0. In Saturday’s doubleheader, the Tigers experienced mixed results. They lost the second game 12-7 but made a strong comeback in the series finale, rallying with two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure a 7-6 victory, ultimately winning the series.

Tougaloo College baseball faced Tuskegee University in a three-game series and achieved victory in the scheduled doubleheader. In the first game, Tougaloo emerged victorious with a score of 4-1, largely due to pitcher Caleb Carter’s impressive performance, which included seven strong innings and six strikeouts. In the second game on Saturday, Tougaloo made a comeback, scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 7-6. However, Tuskegee managed to avoid a sweep by winning the final game 6-3.

The Lincoln University (MO) baseball team achieved its first victory of the season on Saturday, February 8, by defeating William Woods with a walk-off single from Jayden Little, finishing the game with a score of 3-2. This victory marks the Blue Tigers’ first win since the baseball program was reinstated on campus, following its discontinuation after the 2016 season. The win occurred in the second game of a doubleheader, where William Woods had previously won the first game, 11-4.

Xavier University of Louisiana split a baseball doubleheader Saturday with the United States Sports Academy, winning the second game 9-5 after the Eagles won 6-5.

No. 3 Wiley University scored a total of 75 runs while holding Arkansas Baptist to just 5 runs in their three-game series. The scores were 24-2, 22-2, and 29-1.

Weekend Notes: 

No. 10 Dillard University won all three of its games in the Willie Mays Classic at Birmingham, AL, Friday, Feb 07 defeating Southern University at New Orleans 8-6, Harris-Stowe State Saturday, 8-4, and a 6-5 ninth-inning game in walk-off fashion with a one run rally in the bottom of the ninth over Miles College.

Huston-Tillotson University played a doubleheader against Arlington Baptist, splitting the games. In the first game, the Rams were trailing 12-8 in the bottom of the seventh inning but managed to score five runs, achieving a thrilling walk-off victory with a final score of 13-12. Unfortunately, they lost the second game 17-14.

No. 10 Talladega College’s weekend series saw the Tornadoes take two of three from Point University. After losing game one 6-2 on Saturday, Talladega continued its series with a doubleheader win by scores of 12-2 and 6-4.

Harris-Stowe State University baseball improved its season record to 2-3 after competing in the Willie Mays Classic at Rickwood Field. The Hornets won 6-2 against No. 5 Miles on Friday, lost to No. 10 Dillard 8-4, and then secured a 10-7 victory over Stillman College.

Southern University at New Orleans (LA) defeated Claflin University 4-1 in the Willie Mays Classic held at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, AL.
