2025 Baseball Season Preview: Bluefield State University

Last August, Bluefield State University hired one of the leading NCAA Division II coaches, Scott Considine, as its new head baseball coach. Considine brings postseason success with two appearances in the NCAA Division II College World Series.

Considine takes over the baseball program after Bluefield State claimed its second national title, winning the Black College World Series this past May. The Big Blue won the school’s first-ever national championship in the inaugural event in 2021.

With such talented individuals stepping into the spotlight, the upcoming baseball season promises to be thrilling. Fans and scouts alike should keep an eye on these exceptional players as they embark on their journeys in collegiate baseball.

Big Blue’s top two-way player is Tyson Mickie (RHP/1B) – Tampa, FL. An incoming freshman, Tyson Mickie comes from a strong baseball background and is considered a player of significant impact. His versatility as a right-handed pitcher and first baseman makes him a valuable asset to his team.

A top incoming freshman of impact is Junior Powell (C) – South Boston, VA. Hailing from Randolph-Henry High School, Powell had an impressive run with the Statesman, contributing to their back-to-back regional runner-up finishes. A standout player, he earned a first-district selection for two consecutive years. Powell is pursuing a degree in accounting, following in the footsteps of many successful business and accounting professionals in his family.

Daniel Pepke (RHP/1B) – Pittsburgh, PA. Pepke is a dual-threat player from South Park High School. His academic pursuit in conomics stems from a passion for world economics and trade, showcasing his multifaceted talents both on and off the field.

Players to look out for include Angel Martinez (OF) – Camden, NJ, Kevin Rodriguez (INF/OF) – Manchester, NH, Sebastian Ortega (OF) – Bayamon, PR, Will Austin (RHP) – Mebane, NC, Grayson Peel (RHP) – Mooresville, NC, Colton Roberts (RHP) – Philadelphia, PA, and Tomas Rodriguez (C) – Cidra, Puerto Rico.

Impact transfers Will Ricketts (LHP) – Harpers Ferry, WV. Transferring from Frostburg State, Will Ricketts has made a name for himself with an impressive career ERA of 0.98. He has showcased his skills in summer collegiate leagues, playing for the Winchester Royals and the Purcellville Cannons of Valley League. Currently studying business administration, Ricketts aims to blend his love for baseball with aspirations in sports management.

Anderson Moreno (OF) – Bronx, NY. Moreno joins Bluefield State University after a successful stint at Southern New Hampshire University. He earned his place on the all-region team and was recognized as part of the all-tournament team during the NCAA Division 2 Championship. Currently pursuing his Master’s degree, Moreno continues to build on his academic and athletic accomplishments.
