Ten HBCU Baseball “Small School” Players to Look Out For in 2022

Black College Nines (BCN) continues to access the HBCU baseball talent pool and the names you may not know, but could be top players in the making for the 2022 season. We begin by selecting the players who would provide the most value to their teams.

Trey Junkins OF – West Virginia State University Makes contact and drives runners in with a solid bat. A .336 batting average last season which included 7 doubles, 2 home runs, and 35 runs batted in over 37 games he started.

Daniel Brandon LHP – West Virginia State University Last season Brandon put up big numbers on the hill with a 2.75 earned run average, 5-0 in 11 appearances (all in relief), 36.0 innings pitched, 17 strikeouts, while teams batted .238 against Brandon.

Brayden Merrick INF – Bluefield State College A big addition to the Big Blue team is the transfer of Brayden Merrick from Virginia Tech who is a fleet-footed, strongarm, quick up the middle shortstop anchoring the infield. Makes good contact at the plate.

Caleb Cobb UTL – Tuskegee University can play any position and hits a ton. Line drive hitter to the gaps. Defensively, he’s flashed the ability to throw with accuracy from multiple positions on the run. Excellent student on the field. Big time speed.

DeWayne Franklin OF – Savannah State University should help anchor the lineup after batting .410 with 19 runs batted in last season. Franklin, with station to station speed, stole 14 bases last season.

Jeffry Roldan INF – Talladega College is primarily a third baseman but can play any infield position and hits a ton. Line drive hitter to the gaps. Strong defensively. Hit .372 four home runs and 29 runs batted in.

Adriel Acevedo UTL – Talladega College One of the best utility players in HBCU baseball. Acevedo will have an impact offensively and defensively. What’s impressive were his 5 steals in 5 attempts on the base path while batting .310, including 15 doubles 7 home run and 32 runs batted in.

Coco Simoneaux OF – Xavier University of Louisiana His live bat provides punch to the lineup. Has potential to lead the Gold Rush this year offensively and defensively. A legit player who can hit anywhere in the lineup.

Hilman Truss INF – Lincoln University (PA) last season had 2 home runs, hit .342, drove home 24 runs, can play multiple infield positions and swings the bat well. Has a chance to be one of the best players in the East Coast Conference (ECC) this season. Live bat moving runners over and driving runs across the plate.

Dom Lawson OF/UTL – Kentucky State University Good contact hitter. Can go deep and is a spot starter and reliever if called upon by the coaching staff.

Josh Graves INF – Kentucky State University
