Two HBCU Baseball Programs Continue Receiving Votes In NCBWA Division II Regional Poll

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) has released its weekly NCAA Division II polls. Two Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Baseball programs, Virginia State and Winston Salem State, continue to garner votes this week.

The Atlantic Region ranks Winston Salem State at No.7 and Virginia State No.8, two independent DII baseball programs in the polls Top 10 regional rankings.

VSU went 4-1 this past week and defeated the University of Virginia College At Wise, 2 to 1 to win the series. The Trojans of VSU raised its record to 10-4.

WSSU was 5-0 this week, defeating both Wheeling Jesuit and University Science, raising its record to 10-6.

Both VSU and WSSU are former conference rivals from the CIAA, which dropped baseball from its sponsorship after the 2017 season. The conference decided to drop the sport because there was no sign of another CIAA school adding baseball to compete with teams already at WSSU, Chowan, Saint Augustine’s, Virginia State and Lincoln (Pa.) even as the NCAA gave the conference a break as the conference had slipped below the NCAA minimum of six schools sponsoring baseball to qualify for an automatic berth into region play. The CIAA had five baseball programs, the NCAA over the next three seasons rewarded the conference champion with an automatic berth into regional play.

The NCBWA weekly polls will continue throughout the 2018 season.
