Miles College Baseball Returns Talent and Welcomes a Good Group of Newcomers

The Miles College coaching staff has brought in a good recruiting class for the 2021 season under head coach Ty Roberts. The Golden Bears incoming class includes 15 newcomers – thirteen freshmen and two JUCO transfers. Miles went 9-9 during the 2020 shortened season, finished the 2019 campaign 26-23 after losing to Albany State in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) championship game.

For the second-straight season, the Miles baseball program and Coach Roberts and his staff (including assistant coach and former player Xavius Burden) welcomed a top recruiting class to campus when classes started in August.  Of the 13 freshmen, 11 of them earned honors among baseball prep rankings.

Anchoring the 2021 team are a plethora of promising returning players which includes seniors Haywood Spencer and Zavian Caldwell. Top juniors are led by Black College Nines HBCU Baseball Elite pitcher Andrew Datcher, Will Cantey, Jacob Bisharat, Grey Humphries, and Jeffrey Wright. Sophomores include Matthew McDonald, Destin Davidson, Gary McCoy, Bryan Baker, Noah Ledbetter and redshirt freshman Cooper Norris.

Freshman who can turn this program around are outfielder Alex Edwards and pitchers William Johnson, William Hollis, James Owen, Kolton Easterwood, Austin Douglas.

Roberts always gets impact players from the JUCO ranks. Miles has good balance with pitchers and hitters. They have four right-handed pitchers and four left-handed pitchers along with a bunch of hitters. Roberts addressed the bullpen and starting pitching needs for the upcoming season. They’ve also added some impact bats that will help the outfield as well.

The Golden Bears have a chance to sit atop the West Division of the SIAC. It all depends on how hard they work and how much they want it.
