JACKSON, Miss. – The Jackson State baseball team returns to Robert “Bob” Braddy, Sr. Field for a four-game Southwestern Athletic Conference series with Alcorn State.
The series will begin with a make-up game, one that was previously rained out, that will start at noon and the Braves will serve as the home team. The remaining three games are the regularly scheduled games. The two teams will play twice on Friday and then a double-header on Saturday. Saturday’s games are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
Jackson State (16-11, 5-5 SWAC) is the No. 4 ranked team in the HBCU Division I baseball poll, announced by Black College Nines on March 31. The Tigers are currently third in the SWAC Eastern Division, trailing Alabama State and Alabama A&M. JSU is second in the SWAC in batting average (.300).
Melvin Rodriguez is among the leaders in the SWAC in six offensive categories. He leads the league in batting average (.411), hits (44) and RBIs (41). He is also second in the SWAC in double (11) and total bases (60), as well as being sixth in runs scored (24). Gary Thomas is ranked seventh in runs scored (23) while Sam Campbell is third in doubles (10). Alexander Juday is tied for third in win (4-3).
The Tigers have won four of their last seven games, but are coming off a 2-0 non-conference loss to South Alabama.
The Braves (8-19, 3-8) are fourth in the SWAC East rankings and trail the Tigers by three games in the loss column. Alcorn enters the weekend with a .239 batting average and a 7.87 team ERA. The Braves have posted a 2-12 record away from McGowan Stadium and are 1-3 as the visiting team in the state of Mississippi (falling at Mississippi State and Mississippi Valley State). The Braves only win as the visiting team in the state was a 10-8 victory at Mississippi Valley State.
