The Wiley College baseball team rallied in a 4-3 victory and took control in the second game with a 7-1 victory over Calumet College-St. Joseph (Ind.) on Wednesday at Coker Field.

The Wildcats (12-8) improve to 9-3 at home and 11-6 against nonconference opponents.

“We played good baseball against a decent team,” head coach Kendrick Biggs said. “We started a little slow in game one because we didn’t do our normal pre-game routine. I’m pleased with the way we continue to fight no matter the game situation.”

Wiley College put up eight hits in the first game. Justice Brown (SR/Sugarland, Texas) went 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI. Luis Santiago (JR/Salinas, Puerto, Rico) and Tyler Baumann (SR/Houston, Texas) both tripled. Darrell Victoria (SO/Beaumont, Texas) scored two runs – including the go-ahead run and stole a base as Baumann’s courtesy runner.

Joe O’Bryant Jr. (FR/Spring, Texas) made his first start of the season and lasted four innings. He gave up three runs on six hits, walked three, hit one and struck out two. Zachary Norman (JR/Dallas, Texas) made his debut and threw three scoreless innings to earn the win.

The Crimson Wave (3-9) scored three runs in the top of the third. Nicholas Verta led off the inning with a single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly. Trey Burrus, who courtesy ran for catcher Diego Quinones scored on a wild pitch. A double by Diontrell Earls brought in a run.

The Wildcats got one back in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Baumann tripled to right field. Victoria scored when Brown singled to right-center. In the fourth with two outs, Dominic Tezeno(SO/Orange, Texas) singled to short. Santiago hit a triple down the right field line.

Norman was in a tight situation in the top of the fifth with runners at the corners and one out. He got a strikeout and ground out to keep it a one-run game. Wiley College responded. With one out, Brown singled. Ruben Hancock (JR/Sugarland, Texas) singled to the gap in left-center field while Brown advanced to third. Aaron Hendrix (FR/Tatum, Texas) hit a hard ground ball to second which allowed Brown to score the tying run. Calumet’s second baseman threw the ball past first – which allowed Victoria – who pinch ran for Hancock to score.

Baumann, who threw out a base stealer early in the game, came up big defensively in the sixth. A pitch got past him with a runner on third. He was able to recover the ball and tag out the runner for the final out.

After allowing a leadoff single, Norman got outs on a sacrifice bunt and two ground balls to end the game.

In the second game, Wiley College out-hit Calumet College 9-6. Darian Fleming (SR/Beaumont, Texas) went 3-for-3 with two runs and a RBI. Josiah Campbell (SO) drove in two runs and Dorian Lewis(SR/Beaumont, Texas) and Breon Ector (SR/Kilgore, Texas) each brought home a run.

Carlos Torres (SO/Winter Haven, Florida) pitched a complete game to earn his first win of the season. He gave up one run on six hits, walked four, hit one and struck out two.

“He’s steadily showing us he can do what we thought he can do,” Biggs said. “We are pleased with his effort.”

The Wildcats put the game away with a four-run third. Luis Santiago led off with a double and eventually scored on an error. Fleming hit a RBI double. Lewis and Campbell hit RBI singles to put Wiley College up by five.

The Wildcats will resume Red River Athletic Conference play on Thursday against Texas A&M University-Texarkana. The doubleheader will begin at noon. The series concludes on Friday with a 1 p.m. game.
