The Wiley College baseball team rode a strong pitching performance by Brandon Bilnoski (SR/Marshall, Texas) to a 4-2 victory but struggled to get hits in a 6-2 Game 2 loss against Southwestern Assemblies of God University on Friday at Coker Field.
With today’s outcomes the Wildcats move to 3-3 at Coker Field and 5-1 in games played on Friday.
With the temperature in the 30s, Bilnoski went the distance and put a chill on SAGU’s bats – only allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out 10 batters with four looking. It’s Bilnoski’s first double-digit strikeout performance since 2017.
The Wildcats (5-3) scored four runs on three hits – singles by Luis Santiago (JR/Salinas, Puerto, Rico) and Justice Brown (SR/Sugarland, Texas) and a two-RBI triple by Manuel Torres (SO/Winter Haven, Florida). This is the first time, Wiley College has won when it was outhit.
Southwestern Assemblies of God University started the scoring in the second inning. Andrew Diaz reached on a walk and Houston Johnson was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Sonny Boyd popped a single into center field which scored Diaz.
Wiley College answered. Darian Fleming (SR/Beaumont, Texas) and Breon Ector (SR/Kilgore, Texas) led off with walks. Garrett Barber (SR/Lancaster, California) moved them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Manuel Torres laced a line drive down the right field line and ended up at third with a stand-up triple. He came home on a ground ball hit by Luis Santiago.
The Lions (6-4) got a run back in the next inning as AJ Munoz drilled a Brandon Bilnoski pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run. Ruben Hancock (JR/Sugarland, Texas) walked with one out. He advanced on passed ball and wild pitch. Ector struck out but the ball got past the catcher and Hancock scored.
In the second game, the Wildcats only mustered two runs on five hits. It aided SAGU’s offense – which tallied 11 hits – with four errors. Ruben Hancock had his second multi-hit game this season. His first hit of the game went over the left field wall for the first Wildcat home run of the season in the fourth inning – which cut SAGU’s lead to 3-2.
Jon Michael Roberson (SO/Roma, Texas) made his third start of the season and went four innings. He allowed two earned runs on seven hits, walked three and struck out five. Demetrice Rudolph(JR/Reserve, Louisiana)’s scoreless streak was snapped at three appearances as he was tagged with one earned run on three hits. Osman Lugo (FR/Valencia, Venezuela) made his Wildcat debut – throwing a perfect seventh.
“We didn’t play well today,” head coach Kendrick Biggs said. “We let the weather dictate our play. I know it was really cold. We have to learn how to play hard all the time. We have to regroup and play hard for two games tomorrow.”
The Wildcats resume the series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
