Wiley Wildcats Rally Past Saints In Series Opener

SAN ANTONIO – The Wiley College baseball team scored three runs in the eighth inning to overcome a one-run deficit in a 5-3 victory over Our Lady of the Lake University on Friday in a Red River Athletic Conference game at Missions Baseball Academy.

The Wildcats (14-10, 3-4) improve to 4-5 on the road and record their seventh come-from-behind victory.

Luis Santiago (JR/Salinas, Puerto, Rico) reached base in four of five plate appearances with three base hits. He scored two runs – including the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. Tyler Baumann(SR/Houston, Texas) hit a RBI double and gave Wiley College the lead for good in the eighth on a sacrifice fly. He had three defensive assists which led to three key outs.

Brandon Bilnoski (SR/Marshall, Texas) pitched his third complete game and earned his fourth win of the season. He struck out seven batters. He left a runner on third in the second inning. After giving up two runs on two hits, Bilnoski got a flyout. With runners on the corners, Our Lady of the Lake attempted a double steal, Baumann caught Ryan Chapa in a rundown between third and home plate to end the inning.

The game was scoreless through the first four innings. Wiley College only had two hits through the first five. It fell behind in the fifth after giving up a leadoff triple and a single. Santiago caught a line drive and threw to first to complete a double play. He fielded a grounder and ended the inning by getting an out at second.

Wiley College took the lead in the sixth. Santiago led off with a single. He advanced to second on a bunt single by Dominic Tezeno (SO/Orange, Texas). A bobble by the first baseman allowed Santiago to score and Tezeno to move into second. He scored on Baumann’s double.

The Saints, who entered the game in a tie for the conference lead, answered in the seventh. An error put the leadoff runner on base. A passed ball moved the runner to second. With one out, Our Lady of the Lake got doubles from Boedy Flores and Chapa to retake the lead. The inning ended with Chapa being caught in a rundown.

The Wildcats struck for three runs on a hit and two Our Lady of the Lake errors. Dorian Lewis(SR/Beaumont, Texas) led off with a walk and Santiago reached on a bunt single. Tezeno bunted and reached on a wild throw by the pitcher. Timmie Russell (FR/Houston, Texas) who pinch ran for Lewis scored to tie the game. Baumann hit a deep ball to left-center field to score Santiago. A second error brought home Tezeno.

“I feel good about how we came out and played today,” head coach Kendrick Biggs said. “We played good baseball behind Bilnoski. We responded with hits every time we came to bat. Our goal now is to win Game 2 tomorrow.”

Bilnoski only allowed two walks and an infield single in the last two innings to secure the victory. The series resumes with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
