The Wiley College baseball team hopes the tough conference competition pays off as it opens Red River Athletic Conference play with Our Lady of the Lake University Friday and Saturday in San Antonio, Texas.

Friday’s game will be nine innings and start at 4 p.m. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 1 p.m. with a seven inning contest followed by a nine inning game. The Wildcats played six games against teams that were ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA and NCAA Top 25 polls. Wiley College split its last 10 games and scored five runs against Grambling State University in an exhibition game Tuesday.

The Wildcats (5-13) lost 3-1 in last season’s four game series at the Saints. Wiley College trails the overall series 4-3 against Our Lady of the Lake. The Wildcats have seen improvement in its starting pitching as Brandon Bilnoski (SO/Marshall, Texas) and Joe Champion (JR/Brownsville, Texas) went six innings in victories. Austin Rotramel (FR/Plano, Texas) pitched a complete game last week.

Our Lady of the Lake’s top hitters are Matt Beasley and Orlando Collado who are batting .373 and .365, respectively. Collado has a .558 slugging percentage and Beasley is slugging .549. Collado leads the Saints with 12 RBIs.

Wiley College hopes to see more consistency from its offense. In the two games it won, the Wildcats scored five and nine runs. In the two losses, they only scored two runs and averaged four runs per game for the series. Justice Brown (SO/Sugarland, Texas) is leading Wiley College in home runs (4), runs scored (15), RBIs (15) and hits (17). Brown is batting .354 which leads players that have started 10 or more games. In nine games and seven starts, Devin Barnes (SR/Vidalia, Louisiana) is hitting .476. In 13 games and six starts, Garrett Barber (SO/Lancaster, California) is hitting .438. Oswaldo Palacios (SR/Houston, Texas) in 15 games is batting .326.

The top pitcher for the Saints is Brandon Cogbill, who has a 4.11 earned run average. Jordan Hackett has a 4.74 ERA and teams are batting .227 against him. Cogbill has allowed opponents to bat .282 and is averaging 6.1 innings pitched per game. Cogbill has struck out 37 batters for an average of 10.86 per game.
