For the first time in the 2017 season, the Wiley College baseball team got to exchange handshakes and high fives after defeating University of St. Francis for its first victory over the 2017 season Saturday at Coker Field.

Tyler Baumann (JR/Houston, TX) led off the Wildcats’ first inning with a single. Jerry Johnson (SO/Shreveport, LA) pinch ran and advanced to second on a balk. Brian Scott Jr. (JR/New Orleans, LA) put down a sacrifice bunt to move Johnson to third. Johnson scored on a ground out by Zachary Pearson (SR/Louisiana).

The Cougars tied the game the next inning. Justice Brown (SO/Sugarland, TX) gave the lead back to Wiley College with a solo home run to left in the second. Once again, the lead was short lived as University of the St. Francis scored five runs to take a 5-2 lead in the third inning.

After giving up a run in the fourth, the Wildcats surged back. Ruben Hancock (FR/Sugarland, TX) led off with a double and later scored on an error. Zachary Pearson pulled Wiley College within two with a RBI single that scored Johnson. Oswaldo Palacios (SR/Houston, TX) hit a RBI single to left-center field. With the bases loaded, Brown gave the Wildcats the lead for good with a two-RBI double to left-center. An errant throw by University of St. Francis’ shortstop Brady Harris went into the dugout and allowed Justin Harmon (JR/Beaumont, TX) to score and Brown to advance to third. Brown came home on a single by Eloy Reyna III (SO/Houston, TX).

The Cougars got within one, but the Wildcats put the game away with five runs in the sixth. Garrett Barber (SO/Lancaster, California) hit a two-RBI double to right center field – which scored James Richey (FR/Houston, TX), who hit a two-out single and Hancock. Scott hit a RBI double and Pearson hit a two-RBI single.

Darian Fleming (SO/Beaumont, TX) picked up the victory as he pitched the last 3 1/3 innings. He struck out five batters. Austin Rotramel (FR/Plano, Texas) threw the first 3 2/3 innings, giving up six runs (four earned) on six hits and walked four.

In their second game Saturday, the Wildcats re-matched with Ottawa University and took the lead in the second. With one out, Alan Warfield (FR/Shreveport, LA) and Brown hit singles. After advancing on a wild pitch, Dorian Lewis (JR/Beaumont, TX) drove them home with a two-out single.

The lead held up until the sixth inning. The Braves, who averaged 22 runs in their last three games, recorded four hits. Two doubles brought home three runs. Emmanuel Pantaleon (SR/New York, New York) started for the Wildcats and threw 6 2/3 innings and struck out six.

“It felt good to get our first win,” head coach Kendrick Biggs said. “Once again we let a game slip away at the end. We are going to keep working hard to get ready for conference.”

The Wildcats (1-9) host Missouri Valley for a four-game series on Saturday and Sunday at Coker Field.
