SHREVEPORT – The Wiley College baseball team showed they could play with Louisiana State University-Shreveport but came up short in a 9-5 loss in Game one and a 6-5 extra innings loss in Game 2.

“Overall, I’m pleased but not happy with the outcome because we should have won both games,” head coach Kendrick Biggs said. “We allowed one play in each game to cost us the game. The guys see now that we can play with anybody. LSU-Shreveport is a Top 20 team in the NAIA and we gave them all they wanted.”

In the second game, the Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead. With one out, Trevor Spear (SR/Elysian Field, TX) singled and Oswaldo Palacios (SR/Houston, TX) followed with a double. Both players scored on wild pitches to give the Wildcats a two-run lead. Justice Brown (SO/Sugarland, TX) reached on a walk and later scored when Breon Ector (SO/Kilgore, Texas) was hit by a pitch.

Wiley College expanded its lead in the sixth. Tyler Baumann (JR/Houston, TX) led off with a double. Jerry Johnson (SO/Shreveport, LA) pinch ran for him. He came around to score on two fielder’s choices with Brown driving him in. Four outs from victory, the Wildcats gave up their lead. With a runner on second, Wiley College allowed a stolen base and a walk. The next batter hit the ball over the centerfielder’s head for an inside-the-park home run.

The Wildcats threatened in the tenth inning. Zachary Pearson (FR) led off with a walk, Garrett Barber (SO/Lancaster, California) reached on a bunt single. The next two batters grounded out on a fielder’s choice and struck out. LSU-Shreveport, which is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll, got two base hits in the bottom half to end the game.

Brandon Bilnoski (SO/Marshall, TX) started on the mound and went six innings – giving up one run on six hits, walked four and struck out six. Darian Fleming pitched the first game and went 4 1/3 innings – allowing six runs on six hits and walked four.

“I thought our pitchers did very well,” Biggs said. “Darian Fleming and Brandon Bilnoski threw great games.”

Wiley College struck first in Game 1. With one out, Palacios tripled to right-center field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ruben Hancock (FR/Sugarland, TX). The early lead was short lived as the Pilots scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the first.

The Wildcats gave up another run in the second but rallied in the sixth inning. Justin Harmon (JR/Beaumont, TX) led off with a triple and scored on a single by Brown. Nick Garcia (FR) singled with the bases loaded to drive in Brown. James Richey (FR) and Garcia would score on an error. Once again the momentum was short lived as LSU-Shreveport scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Wiley College will visit Texas A&M Kingsville in a three-game series on February 3 and 4.
