BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference (MEC) league offices released its annual preseason poll for the upcoming baseball season on Monday afternoon. The West Virginia State University baseball team was picked to finish third in the South Division after receiving 49 votes and one first-place vote. The 49 votes that West Virginia State received was the fifth-highest total across both divisions.

In the South Division, Charleston and Concord topped the preseason poll. The Golden Eagles received 61 votes and six first-place votes, while the Mountain Lions received 58 votes and five first-place votes. The North Division had a clear favorite in Notre Dame (Ohio) with 65 votes and 10 first-place votes. The closest contender to the Falcons was Fairmont State with 54 votes and the remaining two first-place votes.

The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 2019 season in which they finished 24-23 overall, 19-13 in the MEC. They nearly snuck into the MEC Tournament at the conclusion of the regular season, but were kept out due to a tiebreaker with UVa-Wise. The baseball team has been above .500 every season except for one since head coach Sean Loyd took over in 2014.

Three All-MEC selections return for the 2020 season. Junior second baseman Andrew Stone garnered All-MEC Second Team honors last year after hitting .327 and scoring 42 runs for the Yellow Jackets. Stone spent the offseason playing for the Cape Catfish of the Prospect League and was named Player of the Year after putting up ridiculous numbers. He hit 397 with 16 home runs and 49 RBI while posting an impressive slash line of .397/.489/.725 with a 1.217 OPS. Stone also led the league in hits (89), runs, (66), stolen bases (33) and runs created (75.679).

The other two All-MEC selections returning from last season are junior outfielders Matthew Kline and Matt Harrison. Kline recorded a team-high .368 batting average in 2019 while knocking in 33 runs and crossing the plate himself 31 times. Meanwhile, Harrison batted .336 and belted six home runs while registering a 4-1 record as a relief pitcher.
