University of Arkansas At Pine Bluff baseball player Richard Sanchez has signed a minor league contract with the Kansas City Royals.

Sanchez (5-8, 188; Dovado, P.R.) has been assigned to the Royals’ rookie league affiliate in Surprise, Arizona, just outside of Phoenix.

After transferring from Seminole State College in Oklahoma, Sanchez made an immediate impact on UAPB baseball. In two seasons with the Golden Lions, Sanchez played in 93 games with 90 starts, primarily at catcher, with 78 hits including four home runs and 47 RBI.

In 2019, Sanchez had 41 hits including a career-high three home runs with 23 RBI. He posted seven multi-hit games, including four consecutive to end the season, and four multi-RBI games. Among Sanchez’ highlights this season was a three-hit game including a walk-off three-run homer to defeat Texas Southern on March 30.

One of the league’s top defensive catchers, Sanchez was fourth in the SWAC throwing out 16 base runners trying to steal, and also picked six runners off base.

“Ricky overcame so many obstacles to attain success and I couldn’t be prouder of him,” said head baseball coach Carlos James, himself a product of Seminole State before graduating from UAPB. “He worked extremely hard to be where he is, not only in baseball but also in the classroom, earning his degree this past May. Ricky came to the field every day ready to work and play the game that he loves, and we knew we were always going to get 110 percent effort. He was going to do everything he could to make his teammates better. Ricky embodies everything our program is about, and now he has an opportunity to play professional baseball.”
