NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff baseball team kicks off the 2020 campaign in the Andre Dawson Classic taking on Grambling St. Friday at 7 p.m. at Wesley Barrow Stadium.

The Golden Lions will play a doubleheader Saturday in game one against Prairie View A&M at noon, and Alabama St. in game two at 4 p.m. UAPB will wrap up the final day Sunday against Alcorn St. at 11 a.m.

This is the second consecutive year that the Golden Lions participated in the Classic. Fans can get live stats via or on the free UAPB Athletics App.

Injuries played a big part in the Golden Lions pitching rotation last season, but UAPB head baseball coach Carlos James is looking forward to a more healthy rotation with much-added depth in the 2020 season.

The Golden Lions return five starters in the field, including preseason first-team All-SWAC senior 1B Nick Kreutzer, who led the team with a batting average of .352 and tied for third in the conference in home runs with 11. The Golden Lions also welcomes left fielder senior Larry Sims (.240/5 HR/28 RBIs) and right fielder sophomore Brandon Simon (.204/1 HR/12 RBIs). On the infield, senior shortstop Justin Robinson (.303/12 RBIs) and junior second baseman Jarficur Parker (.269/ 18 RBIs) are all back.

“The main thing is just looking to get a good start of the season, but the rain has hampered a lot of things with the preparation of the season opener,” said James. “With the four games this weekend, you almost have to treat them like spring training games because you have to play as many players as you can, and in that way, they can get the reps they need to be ready for conference play. Overall, I’m looking forward to seeing how our team can handle that.”

UAPB will complete the road trip with a Tuesday game at Baylor before the Golden Lions’ home opener Feb. 21-23 against Lane in a three-game series starting next Friday at 2 p.m. at the Torii Hunter Baseball Complex at Bill Jones Field.
