TUCSON, Ariz. – Two former Stillman Tiger teammates, and now Tucson Saguaros teammates, have continued to shine on the baseball diamond. Outfielder Nick Vitale and pitcher Zack Gonzalez have been selected to the Pescos League All-Star team.

At the halfway point of his first season playing at the professional rank, Vitale is sporting a .369 average from the cleanup spot with two homeruns, 38 RBI, and 28 runs scored. While at Stillman, Vitale hit .467 which ranked him 8th among all NCAA DII players. Vitale added four homeruns and 34 RBI out of the leadoff spot.

“Nick is possibly the most talented player that I have coached,” said his former college coach Julius McDougal. “With his ability and work ethic, it’s not a surprise that he has continued to have success. I believe if given the opportunity, he will have continued success at any level.”

Gonzalez had a 3.61 ERA during his time at Stillman and notched three wins against nationally ranked opponents. In only 52.1 innings, Gonzalez totaled 66 Strikeouts with only 10 walks.  So far this season with the Saguaros, Gonzalez has taken his game to the next level with a 2.78 ERA and a 1-0 record with a WHIP of 1.03. In 32.1 innings of work, Gonzalez has collected 35 strikeouts while only walking 12 batters.

“Gonzo’s success is not a shock,” said McDougal. “He has excellent command of five pitches that he can throw at any point in the count wherever he wants. He is very versatile and can be used in multiple roles on the mound.”

The Saguaros currently sit on top of the Pecos League’s Pacific Division with a 29-10 record, one game ahead of Bakersfield, whom they swept earlier this season.

The Pecos League All-Star Game will be played at Sam Lynn Park in Bakersfield on July 12, 2017. The Bakersfield Train Robbers will host this game.
