DURHAM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University baseball pitchers Alex Dandridge and Andrew Vernon were both named to the North Carolina University Division All-State Baseball Second Team the North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) announced on Thursday, June 29.

Vernon earned an All-State selection for the second time in his career after being named to the All-State Team in 2015, and this is the first selection for Dandridge.  Vernon is one of four All-State players that have been named to a previous team along with Gavin Stupienski of UNC Wilmington, Danny Bermudez of Western Carolina and Matt Parrish of Campbell.

Dandridge, who hails from Arlington, Texas, was charged with 13 starts and went 4-3 with 58 strikeouts, the second-most on the staff.  He was also involved in a combined shutout against North Carolina A&T where he threw seven strikeouts over six innings.  He was efficient on the mound as he kept an opposing batting average of .260 which was top-10 in the MEAC, and he was also top-10 in hits and runs allowed with 65 and 38, respectively.

Vernon had a record-breaking campaign with NCCU capped by him becoming the program’s first ever MLB draft selection when he was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 28th round.  The Raleigh, North Carolina native was a First Team All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference selection after leading the league in strikeouts with 85, a new modern era record at NCCU.  With those 85 strikeouts he also finished in the top-five of the NCAA Division I standings in strikeouts per nine innings with a rate of 12.34.  Vernon made 19 appearances along with six starts for a staff-best ERA of 3.34 which was fifth in the MEAC, and he also finished tied for third in the conference with four saves.

Dandridge and Vernon join current Eagle Carlos Ortiz and former student-athletes Zack Lee, Tyson Simpson and Carter Williamson on the list of NCCU All-State honorees in the University Division.
