The Tuskegee University baseball team is set to open the 2019 season Wednesday afternoon in a single game at Paterson Field when they host the University of Montevallo in a mid-week contest in Montgomery at 12:00 p.m.

The Golden Tigers return a load of upperclassmen which include six seniors and eight juniors from a team that made it through day two of last season’s Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Baseball Tournament. The high mark of the league’s postseason event was defeating Claflin 10-3 in the first round.

Pitcher Christian Marshall is expected to be the club’s Ace. He returns to the mound after appearing in 12 games last season with 10 starts. The New Orleans, La. native also struck out 48 batters. Marshall’s high school teammate and senior catcher Elgin Woodside drove in the most runs in 2018 with 35 RBI while also going yard seven times. College Park native Matthew Reed brings back the most hits to the roster with 34.

The Falcons lost several key pieces, including three All-Gulf South Conference selections and two members of the weekend rotation from last season.

Montevallo opened the 2019 season with a No. 8 ranking in the NCAA Division II South Region preseason poll released by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, but the Falcons have plenty of work to do to provide any meaning to the preseason prognostications.

Despite the losses, the Falcons return several upperclassmen who are veterans with multiple years of experience in the program.

Senior Jason Cryar, a returning starter at shortstop, will lead Montevallo at the plate after batting .305 with four home runs a year ago while driving in 36 runs. Cryar played a key role in helping the Falcons reach the NCAA Division II South Regional in his first season on the field after sitting out a season as a transfer from South Alabama, but the postseason experience left the returning players with additional motivation.
