Tuskegee University used a late-inning rally to top the Lee baseball team, 3-2 on Sunday afternoon to avoid a three-game series sweep.

The Tigers scored a single run in the seventh inning and tacked on two more in the eighth to overcome a two-run deficit. Matthew Reed delivered a single in the seventh to get Tuskegee on the board. The following inning Devon Shaw drew a bases-loaded walk and Gabriel Selochan followed with a run-scoring bloop single to put the Golden Tigers ahead for good.

Jordyn Thomas (1-0) earned the win for the Golden Tigers as he struck out seven and allowed two runs, one earned on four hits in seven innings. Gabriel Selochan was called on to close it out and worked two scoreless innings to earn the save.

Jumpei Akanuma started for the Flames and went seven strong innings allowing just two hits and one unearned run while striking out seven.

Jay Prior came on in relief and was tagged with the loss giving up two runs and three hits in two innings of work.

“Overall I thought I pitching and defense were very solid again today but we have to execute better at the plate,” acknowledged head coach Mark Brew. “When you let teams hang around and don’t extend the lead this is the result you get. We need to be better in situational hitting and be aggressive when the count is in our favor and we didn’t do that very well this entire weekend.”

Thomas Zazzaro put Lee on the board with a sacrifice fly in the second inning. The Flames tacked on a second score in the third inning as Tyler Payne stole third and advanced home on a throwing error.

TU will travel to Montevallo on Wednesday for a single game that begins at 12:00 p.m.
