NORFOLK, Va. – Coppin State’s Justin BanksMarcos Castillo and Aaron Rea have been named to the 2020 MEAC Baseball Preseason All-Conference Team, it was announced by the league office on Thursday.  The Eagles were picked to finish sixth of eight teams in the Preseason Poll while also earning one first-place vote.

Banks was selected to the First Team while Castillo and Rea earned Second Team honors.

A senior first baseman from Fairfield, Calif., Banks was a First Team All-MEAC selection in 2019 after leading the conference in hitting (.394), slugging (.588) and on-base percentage (.493) while also leading the league in the same categories during conference play.  Banks ranked among the Nation’s best in several categories, finishing 16th in batting average and 20th in on-base percentage.

Leading Coppin to a school-record 24 games last year, Banks also finished second in the MEAC in doubles (17), and 3rd in both RBI (44) and total bases (97).  Banks also recorded 22 multi-hit games with six games with at least three hits.  He also accumulated ten multi-RBI games while driving in four or more on three separate occasions.

Castillo anchors a young, talented outfield and brings all five tools to the Eagles lineup.  A junior from Round Rock, Texas, Castillo hit .349 with nine doubles, 19 RBI, 11 stolen bases and a league-high six triples in just 35 games last season.  Castillo earned a MEAC Player of the Week award early last season prior to going down with injury but still managed 14 multi-hit games, including five 3-hit efforts, and five multi-RBI games.

Despite going 11-1 in conference play on the mound the last two seasons, this is the first time that Rea has been recognized on either a Preseason or Postseason All-MEAC team.  A redshirt senior from Altamonte Springs, Fla., Rea enters his final collegiate season ranked second in CSU history in starts (41), wins (15) and innings pitched (231.1) while ranking third with 191 strikeouts.  This past season, Rea finished 5-4 while striking out 71 batters in 65.1 innings while going 5-1 with 53 strikeouts and a 3.94 ERA in conference action.

North Carolina A&T was picked to win the conference with nine first place votes, followed by Florida A&M, Norfolk State, Bethune-Cookman, North Carolina Central, Coppin, Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore.

The Eagles open the 2020 season on February 14-16 at The Citadel, starting with a 4 pm start on Valentine’s Day.  Saturday’s game starts at 2 pm, followed by a 1 pm first pitch on Sunday.  Coppin’s home opener is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18 against Saint Peter’s at 3 pm after 16-straight road games to open the year.
