BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama State infielder Eriq White and Alcorn State pitcher Bukhari Brown have been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference’s Baseball Players of the Week after impressive efforts this past weekend. The league made the announcement Monday afternoon.

Pitcher of the Week – Brown tossed eight innings, scattering seven hits over the course of his March 2 start versus Alabama A&M. The senior from Byram, Miss. got the win after he struck out seven hitters and allowed one unearned run during the Braves’ 4-1 victory.

Hitter of the Week – White hit .500 over five games – three against conference opponent Mississippi Valley State — collected 11 hits in 22 official at-bats, scoring nine runs and knocking in another seven runs. He also collected a pair of doubles and walked three times. He finished the week accounting for 16 runs, having a slugging percentage of .591 and an on-base percentage of .560.

Other Notable Performances:
– Southern’s Tyler LaPorte hit .500 (10-for-20) in five contests this weekend, helping lead Southern to a 3-2 week. LaPorte had three multi-hit games and drove in seven runs while scoring four more.

– Alabama State’s Yamil Pagan hit .381 with two stolen bases, nine runs scored and eight runs batted in (accounting for 17 runs in five starts). Pagan recorded a double and a pair of home runs against Mississippi Valley State, posting a slugging percentage of .714 and an on-base percentage of .500.

– Alabama State’s Noel Cheneau picked up 10 hits in 24 at-bats with three runs scored and another nine runs batted in, while recording three doubles, a triple and a home run. He also finished with a stolen base, an on-base percentage of .417 and a slugging percentage of .750.

– Alabama State’s Darren Kelly went 5.1 innings against Mississippi Valley State in his longest start since off-season arm surgery. The senior did not factor into the decision, but he only allowed four hits, while holding Mississippi Valley State off the scoreboard. He walked three and struck out eight.

– Alabama A&M’s Michael Hovermill went 8.0 innings during a Friday start against Alcorn State, allowing six hits and two runs (one earned) in the Bulldogs’ 11-2 win over Alcorn State. Hovermill struck out six batters in the winning effort.

– Prairie View A&M’s Kyle Smith made an eight-inning start for the Panthers in the team’s 9-2 win over UAPB Sunday. Smith allowed seven hits and two earned runs, striking out seven hitters in earning the win. Teammate Dalton Horner went 6-for-13 in the team’s three-game series against UAPB, driving in four runs with a pair of home runs as PVAMU won two of three.

– Grambling State’s Bryan Delgado pitched the opening game against Texas Southern and went 6.0 innings. He gave up one run on four hits and fanned two to pick up the win.

– Grambling State’s Ian Bailey played in four of the five games for Grambling State during the week. He went 8-for-15 at the plate (.533) with five doubles. In addition, he scored seven times and drove in two. He walked twice and stole two bases. For the week, he registered a .867 slugging percentage.
