BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Alabama A&M’s Michael Hovermill and Southern’s Hunter David have been named the Southwestern Athletic Conference Baseball Players of the Week following exceptional efforts during the past week of play.

Pitcher of the Week – Hovermill threw a complete-game shutout as he allowed just six hits during the Bulldogs’ 6-0 win over Mississippi Valley State. The freshman struck out a pair of hitters. Additionally, he made a relief appearance during the team’s 8-2 victory over Bethune-Cookman, where he worked a scoreless eighth inning. Hovermill has not allowed a run over his last three appearances.

Hitter of the Week – David continued to build on his impressive season with a 7-for-12 performance in four games this past week. In addition to posting a .583 batting average, the SWAC’s leading hitter scored nine runs and drove in five RBIs. David did most of his damage during a Saturday doubleheader versus Prairie View A&M, going a combined 5-for-9 at the plate with seven runs scored and five RBIs.

Other Notable Performances:
– Alabama A&M’s Jonathan Smith II went 8-for-15 over the Bulldogs’ past five games – all wins – while scoring seven runs, driving in four RBIs, and knocking three extra-base hits.

– Southern’s Tyler LaPorte hit .375 (9-for-24) over the week, with six RBIs, six runs scored and four extra-base hits.

– Texas Southern’s Aron Solis tossed a complete-game victory Friday in leading the Tigers to a 6-3 win at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Solis allowed just two earned runs and struck out nine batters in the win.

– Alabama State’s Noel Cheneau finished the week hitting .444 in a pair of games, adding a double, a pair of stolen bases, two runs scored and three runs batted in. He finished 4-for-5 on the road in a 9-5 victory over Jacksonville State on Wednesday.
