Falcons Pitcher Wears No. 42 In Honor Of Baseball Icon

RALEIGH, NC – On Saturday, April 15, which was Jackie Robinson Day, the Saint Augustine’s University baseball program announced that standout pitcher Rickey Rice (R-Sr., Union, SC) is wearing No. 42 this season in honor of Robinson, who broke the baseball color line and became the first African-American to play on a major sports team. The Falcons visited Bluefield State College in a doubleheader Saturday in Princeton, W.Va.

Each year, the number will be given to an outstanding Falcons senior who best exemplifies Robinson’s character on and off the field. The inaugural honor went to Rice, who leads the CIAA and ranks 13th nationally in Division II in strikeouts (84). The coaching staff chose Rice because of his leadership, attitude, approach to the game, mental toughness and work ethic.

“It makes me proud to see a young man respect the game and love the game the way he does,” Falcons Head Coach Charles Whitaker said.

Rice ranks second in the CIAA in earned run average (3.09). He is a two-time CIAA Pitcher of the Week this season.
